This week’s devotional

Jeannine Alves, 14 August 2022

Sorting through my belongings in preparation for a big move has shown me just how many bowls and other receptacles I have in my possession.

Some are plain glass; others cut glass, and crystal; there are earthenware bowls, metal bowls, heat-proof glass bowls, lacquer bowls and wooden bowls. (I’ll have to give you notice of the garage sale when the time comes.) But the ones I appreciate the most are those made by a son during Art classes at school. He thought about what I would like and find some use for. God uses us, His favourite bowls, in which to place the treasure of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ, sent forth to illuminate a dark world.

“The god of this age has blinded the eyes of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, Who is the image of God…For God Who said ’Let light shine out of darkness’, made His light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the glory of God in the face of Christ. But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that the all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.” (2 Corinthians 4:4; 6-7 NIV)
